Monumental Sports & Entertainment recognizes that owning professional sports franchises carries a public trust and we have a duty to support our local communities. 

Our players, coaches and employees live by our double-bottom line philosophy, where we strike to do well as business while also finding ways to serve a larger purpose by contributing to society, protecting our environment and creating prosperity and opportunity for the local community. 

We believe the opportunity to give back enriches the relationship between a sports team, its fans and their communities. Ultimately, we want our franchises and our players to be a source of tremendous pride for communities and fans around the world. 

Most importantly we can bring investment, regeneration and employment to our area. 

The innovations we create and the extraordinary experiences we enable are designed to benefit the entire D.C. population.

UP2US Sports
With the $80K donated to Up2Us Sports, we have funded a dozen more coaches to service more than 1,500 kids towards becoming healthier and future-focused young people in their community.

With the $170K donated to TAPS, (Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors), more than 200 families were given resources in the form of education assistance, grief counseling, peer monitoring and other community-oriented supports.

Martha's Table
With the $125K donated to Martha's Table, we've funded over 100K meals, paid for programs for 70 early childhood learners, supported salaries for family-support services and paid for internships for DC high school seniors.

DC Central Kitchen
We raised $132,500 for DC Central Kitchen which means more than 10 additional students were able to participate in the Culinary Job Training Program to empower themselves and attain higher paying jobs and we funded 12,000 more direct meals to our neighbors.

Greater Washington Urban League
We raised $104,400 for GWUL which was contributed to the League's Scholarship Program and their College Sustainability Fund, two programs that help Black and Hispanic young people get to and stay in college. We directly helped twelve students with a maximum grant of $8,000 per student and an additional dozen with grants to help them stay in school.

Hope For Henry
The MSEF donated $50,000 to Hope for Henry at the start of the month, just ahead of the COVID-19 disruption. We were not able to fully execute the gift-giving program to this nonprofit which supports children who are hospitalized due to chronic illness.

Leveling the Playing Field
The MSEF donated $50,000 to Leveling the Playing Field. We still support their work and have team-branded collection bins throughout the DMV and Baltimore where the public can drop off used athletic equipment which goes to children with limited access to athletic resources.

SMYAL
The Caps supported SMYAL's (Supporting and Mentoring Youth Advocates and Leaders) work in 2020 and with MSE Foundation were able to auction Caps rainbow-themed gear and raised nearly $15,000 for their programming which includes stable housing, education and employment navigation, and mental health supports for LGBTQ+ youth.

What is Social Impact?

In October 2019, we launched the MSE’s Social Impact program and for the 2019-20 season. We reimagined our philanthropic giving to move from disparate giving to a monthly, focused campaign which we believe would have a deeper community impact. We saw great initial success, but just five months after launching, the COVID-19 pandemic altered our plans.

The Social Impact program was always intended to be fan-facing: to energize and translate into action the nearly 20,000 fans who are at Capital One Arena during the more than 80 home games between the Caps and Wizards and the thousands of fans who attended the more than 50 home games of both the Mystics and Capital City Go-Go at Entertainment and Sports Arena.

Without that audience, the program was put on hold as Capital One Arena and Entertainment and Sports Arena remained dark – and then extended through the 2021-2022 season as uncertainty from the Covid-19 pandemic lingered.

As our business continues to recover from pandemic-induced losses, we look forward to reengaging the program in future seasons. But we are incredibly proud of our success and know it made a measurable impact in the lives of our neighbors.

Promoting Civic Engagement

Headcount Partnership
MSE has teamed up with the nonprofit organization HeadCount to make sure fans are ready to vote in the 2022 midterm elections and beyond. Volunteer representatives from Headcount will be stationed at tabling locations for all Capitals, Wizards, Mystics games and concerts at Capital One Arena throughout the 2022-23 season.

2020 Partnership

Recap - When We All Vote

Through our partnership with When We All Vote and our online voter registration efforts – we registered nearly 500 people for the 2020 election cycle. 

Nearly 50 people we registered in-person during our voter registration drive with DC Board of Elections at Entertainment & Sports Arena on Oct. 13, 2020 and more than a dozen through the WNBA teams challenge organized by our Mystics.

Our teams put out social media messages to encourage registration, early vote, direct fans to request-and-return absentee ballots and turnout safely in person during Early Voting and on Election Day.

Beyond that, our players personally put out social media posts, recorded PSAs, and promoted dozens of posts encouraging greater civic engagement – including John Wall, Bradley Beal, Natasha Cloud, and John Carlson.

DC BOE sent out postcard mailers to all DC households with our team logos and encouraging people to turnout to vote.

Nearly 4,500 people voted in-person at Capital One Arena and ESA during Early Voting and on Election Day – with thousands more who used the secure drop boxes at both arenas.

Media from national and local outlets as well as reporters from across the world came to Capital One Arena to learn about how our athletes stepped up to use their platform, understand how efficiently and safely we designed our operation and capture our voting work for the community.

Nearly a dozen of our own staff were trained by DCBOE and volunteered throughout Early Voting and on Election Day at Capital One Arena.

Capitals, Capital City Go-Go, Commanders, D.C. Shadow, D.C. United, Mystics, Nationals, Spirit, and Wizards joined in partnership with Everytown for Gun Safety to donate to Washington nonprofits combatting gun violence.

Player-Led Community Roundtables
A coalition group co-hosted by MSE led "Disrupting Gun Violence," a community roundtable in Washington D.C. in August 2022. The event brought together those most affected by gun violence with community leaders, government officials, and Wizards players Anthony Gill and Monte Morris, and Mystics player Natasha Cloud to amplify the need for trauma support and community-based violence prevention programs.

The Wizards will recognize seven local Black-owned businesses this season across a variety of industries. From October 2022 to April 2023, the seven businesses will be featured on the team's Black-Owned DMV page, the Wizards' social channels, in-game activations and through Wizards marketing assets.

The Foundation invests in local and national organizations that promote school-to-career and workforce development opportunities. The Marcus Graham Project is a non-profit organization that holds nationwide programs designed to provide young aspiring individuals from all backgrounds in the fields of marketing and media with the exposure, mentorship and experience needed to hold careers within the industry. The Marcus Graham Project was one of the first organizations awarded an inaugural grant from the NBA Foundation. Most recently, the Wizards and Capitals hosted the MGP Sports Marketing Workshop at Capital One Arena in Sept. 2022.
