Esports has arrived. No longer a niche movement, esports has gone global and Monumental is excited to be a major player.
As a key investor in aXiomatic, we’re building a portfolio of dynamic company holdings in the esports and video gaming industry. And with controlling interest in one of the world’s premier esports brands, Team Liquid, we’re leading the way as live video gaming fast becomes the world’s next major, mainstream, mass-market sport.
We’re also investing right here in D.C., launching our Wizards District Gaming team in the 2017 inaugural season of the NBA 2K League. We’ve partnered with the NHL in 2019 to host the Chel Classic, a 3v3 EA NHL19 showcase, where eight different EA SPORTS NHL19 players from around the world qualified to play and compete in front of a live audience. We also recently opened our interactive gaming concourse on the second floor of the Capital One Arena.
For our brand partners, esports offers an incredible opportunity to connect with a huge fan base. In 2018 esports captured over 400 million viewers, which likely explains why sponsorship revenues were up 53%. PwC projects worldwide esports revenues of $1.58 billion by 2022.
With these and similar initiatives, we’re elevating the sport to the very highest professional standards and are introducing new audiences to the excitement of esports.
