Monumental Sports & Entertainment and NBC Sports Washington Earn Multiple Capital Emmy Awards

Washington, D.C. – In their 65th annual ceremony, the National Capital Chesapeake Bay Chapter of The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences announced Monumental Sports & Entertainment (MSE) and NBC Sports Washington as recipients of eight total Capital Emmy Awards, including Dave Johnson being honored with the Ted Yates Award. The ceremony took place in Bethesda, MD on June 24 and was attended by hundreds of professionals in the local television and production industry.

MSE took home awards in multiple categories including, Sports Promotion for the Washington Wizards Classic Jersey Reveal created by Jim Kowats (Executive Producer), Paul Turner (Producer) and Tim Libeau (Senior Editor); Diversity/Equity/Inclusion-Short Form for the Washington Wizards: A Team Win created by Paul Turner (Producer), Yannick Skerritt (Producer), Kelsey Mizeur (Videographer) and Alex Diamond (Videographer); Sports Story-Short Form for #Ovi800 created by Aimee Brillhart (Executive Producer), Stephanie De Lancey (Producer), Robert Clarke (Editor) and Casey Martindale (Editor); Sports Program-Live for the Washington Capitals Pregame Live Show created by Tim McDonough (Executive Producer), Tim McDermott (Producer), Alexander Marquez (Editor/Producer), Shaun Salehi (Producer), Alexa Landestoy (Host), Alan May (Analyst), Darryl Johnson (Video Photographer) and Greg Abernathy (Video Photographer); Live Sporting Event/Game for the Washington Capital Game Broadcast: Ovechkin Breaks Gordie Howe’s Record created by Bill Bell (Executive Producer), Ryan Billie (Producer), Joe Beninati (Play-by-Play Announcer), Craig Laughlin (Color Analyst) and Adam Miller (Graphics Coordinator); and individual awards in Sports Play-by-Play for Joe Beninati (Play-by-Play Announcer), and Sports Editing for Tim Libeau (Senior Editor).

The Academy dedicated a portion of the evening to Dave Johnson, longtime WTOP Radio Senior Sports Director, Washington Wizards and D.C. United play-by-play commentator, and recipient of the Ted Yates Award. This award is given to an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to television news and affairs through their personal qualities in the National Capital Chesapeake Bay region. Johnson has served 26 seasons as the official radio play-by-play voice of the Washington Wizards. Johnson is also known as THE voice of D.C. United (MLS)  with his famous call of “It’s in the Net!”, which he used frequently throughout his time as the television play-by-play announcer since the team was founded in 1996. After almost 30 years in the TV booth, he moved to the radio side this season where he still travels with the team for all home and away matches. Johnson is a previous Emmy Award winner for his work as a sideline reporter for the Washington Capitals, and has been a sports anchor for multiple networks, play-by-play announcer for college football, lacrosse, and the voice for the 2006 FIFA World Cup on XM radio. He has been presented with the A.I.R. award three times as the best radio sportscaster in Washington, D.C., and also won an Edward R. Murrow award for his writing on sports commentaries on WTOP.

MSE and NBC Sports Washington earned 10 overall Capital Emmy nominations in eight different categories, recognizing nearly 30 talented Monumental Sports employees.

Last September, MSE acquired full ownership of NBC Sports Washington from Comcast/NBC Universal, retaining key talent and integrating members of the production staff into the parent organization. Last week, MSE announced the station will be branded “Monumental Sports Network” with a new slate of programming to go into effect this fall, ahead of the NBA and NHL seasons – at which time the NBC Sports Washington moniker will be retired.

The Capital Emmy Awards is non-profit, professional organization serving the Maryland, Virginia and Washington, D.C. television and media community. The Capital chapter is representative of the Emmy® Award, the TV industry’s gold-standard for the recognition of television excellence.
