Monumental Sports & Entertainment’s Premier NHL Esports arm set to elevate the gaming scene with its highest North American Prize pool to date; new initiatives.
Washington, DC – Caps Gaming, a trailblazer in NHL esports under the Washington Capitals and Monumental Sports & Entertainment, announced plans today for the 2023-24 season. These plans include an updated competitive team roster and a series of high-stakes tournaments with larger prize pools than ever. Already known as one of the first official esports sub-brands of an NHL club, Caps Gaming is set to lead the league again in 2024 as the first to host a live LAN event.
“We’re incredibly excited about the upcoming 2023-24 season at Caps Gaming,” said Zach Leonsis, President of Media & New Enterprises for Monumental Sports & Entertainment. “We aim to continuously elevate the experience for our players and fans, integrating the thrill of traditional sports with the dynamic world of esports. Leveraging our talented roster of streamers and our leading esports facility, District E, we’re ready to make this season a landmark in NHL esports.”
For the 2023-24 season, Caps Gaming retains most of its star players from its inaugural year, including Polgz, Cad, Geimer, Desy, and Vaynx, while welcoming new Center, Buhckle. The roster has already proven its strength this year by finishing ahead of 88 teams to emerge as the champion of the Islanders’ IGT 24 OPEN in NHL 24, claiming a $2,000 prize in November.
The Caps Gaming Showcase, the team’s signature competition, is a prestigious 6v6 EA Sports NHL tournament on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S/X. This season’s event features a $15,000 prize pool, the largest that Caps Gaming has ever offered for a single division. The competition features an 8-week Swiss-format competition, culminating in a top 64 single-elimination tournament. The 2023 Showcase will focus exclusively on the North American division and will host the finals at Caps Gaming’s home venue, District E Powered by Ticketmaster. Registration opens on December 13th.
“As we advance into the new season, District E stands at the forefront of our ambitious plans,” said Andrew McNeill, Vice President of Esports at Monumental Sports & Entertainment. “This state-of-the-art venue is a home for Caps Gaming and a hub for community engagement, technological innovation, and a testament to our commitment to growing esports in the DMV. The venue is crucial in bridging the gap between virtual competition and real-world excitement.”
Additionally, the Capitals Club Championship returns to District E in January. This NHL esports tournament will feature one cross-platform bracket via Xbox Series X/S. Gamers will compete for a chance to win the entire $1,000 prize pool and represent the Capitals in the NHL23 World Championship.
This season will feature collaborative NHL content from the Washington Capitals and District E content creators. Esports enthusiasts can watch the thrilling matchups live on twitch.tv/capitals.
