The Caps Gaming Showcase presented by Leidos returns for a third consecutive year and new Caps Gaming Esports Youth Camp introduced

Washington, DC –  Caps Gaming, the esports sub-brand of the Washington Capitals announced plans today for the upcoming NHL esports season with an emphasis on connecting with new and existing fans who embrace gaming. Since its launch in 2019, Caps Gaming has aimed to help foster the growth of the NHL competitive gaming community and create visibility for hockey’s esports scene through competitions and grassroots events.

“With competitive esports proving to be a highly engaging platform for younger hockey fans, it’s fitting that Caps Gaming continues to lead the way for NHL esports,” said Zach Leonsis, Senior Vice President of Strategic Initiatives at Monumental Sports & Entertainment. “We remain invested in esports as a key initiative because we believe in the future of gaming and the importance of reaching this next generation of fan.”

The team’s signature competition, the Caps Gaming Showcase presented by Leidos, is a 6v6 EA Sports NHL tournament on Xbox Series S/X for a $20,000 prize pool. Last year’s competition featured more than 120 teams. The Showcase features an 8-week Swiss-format competition, followed by a single-elimination tournament featuring the top 64 teams. This year, the showcase will introduce a new European division which allows overseas teams to enter the action and compete within their region. Competition in the Caps Gaming Showcase European division will take place on PlayStation 4. Signups for both divisions of the Caps Gaming Showcase will open on Thursday, November 11.

Following the Caps Gaming Showcase in the Spring, Caps Gaming will keep the NHL esports action going with the Caps Gaming 3s Challenge presented by McDonald’s DMV. Returning for the second consecutive year, this NHL esports skills tournament will feature two simultaneous brackets, one on Xbox One and another on Xbox Series S/X. Gamers will compete for a chance to win a share of the $5,000 prize pool.

Pursuant to its mission to grow the NHL esports community, Caps Gaming will introduce its inaugural Caps Gaming Esports Youth Camp presented by the University of North America and powered by Game Gym. This multi-day youth esports camp will feature athletic and life skills development, fitness, and mentorship for aspiring NHL esports competitors in the DMV. More information on the Caps Gaming Esports Youth Camp, including how to register, will be announced in the coming weeks.

“The growth we’ve seen from Caps Gaming in just two seasons is something we’re all proud of,” said Andrew McNeill, Senior Director of Esports at Monumental Sports & Entertainment. “The ‘Chel’ community has welcomed the programming, and we hope to continue broadening the fan base with signature events and outreach.”

Gameplay from both the Caps Gaming Showcase and 3s Challenge will be broadcast live on the Capitals’ Twitch channel at http://twitch.tv/capitals. Visit bit.ly/CapsGaming and follow Caps Gaming on Twitter and Instagram at @CapsGaming for additional information and announcements.
