Monumental’s awards recognized groups and individuals across Monumental Sports Network and MSE’s productions team for their work from January 1 through December 31, 2023. MSE and MNMT earned 16 overall Capital Emmy nominations in 11 different categories, recognizing nearly 60 talented Monumental Sports employees.
“We are tremendously proud of all the work that has gone into launching our independent media platform over the past year and are thrilled to have our top-notch content and employees recognized with these deserved awards,” said Zach Leonsis, President of Media & New Enterprises at Monumental Sports & Entertainment. “Our people are our most valuable asset and it’s an honor to have so many of our best-in-class employees in front of and behind the camera recognized as Capital Emmy Award winners.”
Monumental Sports Network (previously NBC Sports Washington) has had a long history of success with the Capital Emmys. Prior to tonight, the incredible roster of talent, many of whom were integrated into the new network, had won more than 40 Capital Emmys over the past 10 seasons and received more than 70 nominations. MSE Productions, the namesake company’s existing, in-house production arm, has also had a successful record of nominations and wins. Last year, MSE Productions was nominated for five Capital Emmys and took home four awards – and has won more than a dozen Emmy Awards over the last five years.
In December, Sports Business Journal (SBJ) announced Monumental Sports Network as the recipient of its “Best in Local Media” award for 2023, part of SBJ’s fifth-annual “Year-End Awards.” In April, MNMT was awarded best new show (“Caps Red Line”) and outstanding individual achievement in sports broadcasting (Alexa Landestoy) at the 2024 Cynopsis Sports Media Awards. Then in May, MSE celebrated earning the “Sports and Entertainment Company of the Year for Engagement Excellence” award at the 2024 Hashtag Sports Awards.
Monumental Sports Network has undergone a period of rapid growth recently. In August 2022, Monumental Sports & Entertainment acquired full ownership of NBC Sports Washington from Comcast/NBC Universal. The station was rebranded Monumental Sports Network in September 2023 with a new slate of programming. For fans without a Pay TV subscription, in October 2023, Monumental Sports Network rolled out direct-to-consumer (DTC) subscription memberships for viewers seeking to access Monumental Sports Network’s live and on-demand programming. In March of this year, the network unveiled a brand-new multi-million-dollar home for the local media platform, including a best-in-class production facility and broadcast studios. Finally, in early April the network announced a slate of live alternate broadcasts for Washington Capitals and Wizards games with a rotation of hosts, analysts, and special guests.
In addition to owning the local broadcast rights for the Washington Capitals, Wizards, and Mystics, Monumental Sports Network broadcasts a robust lineup of original programming and live men’s and women’s college basketball, college football, college volleyball, high school basketball, and esports, as well as Washington Spirit (NWSL), Old Glory DC (Major League Rugby), Hershey Bears (AHL), and Annapolis Blues (NPSL) games.
